Theodore Nagel, MD, FACOG
Reproductive Endocrinologist
Theodore C. Nagel, M.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women's Health and the Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology. In addition to being a board certified Reproductive Endocrinologist, Dr. Nagel is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Internal Medicine, and Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Dr. Nagel received his medical degree from the Cornell Medical College in 1963. After completing his training in Internal Medicine at Bellevue Hospital and Memorial Hospital/Sloan Kettering Institute in New York City, and two years in the US Navy, he completed a fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism at Northwestern University in Chicago. He was the Head of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the VA Research Hospital for two years before making a career change to Obstetrics and Gynecology. He then completed training in OB/Gyn at the University of Minnesota in 1977, and Reproductive Endocrinology in 1980.
Dr. Nagel joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota in 1977. In 1984 he and Dr. George Tagatz were the first physicians to perform in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Minnesota. Dr. Nagel has been actively involved in this area ever since. In 1989 he left the University to form Reproductive Health Associates, which pioneered the concept of providing IVF services for a fixed cost, and refunding most of the fee if no successful pregnancy was achieved after three attempts. This permitted a couple to attempt IVF without depleting the financial resources needed for adoption should the IVF be unsuccessful. He returned to the University of Minnesota in 1999 to be the Director of the Division and to enhance the training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility for the OB/Gyn resident physicians.
Always interested in therapeutic advances, he was among the first physicians in the United States to advocate for endoscopic surgery. He has published articles in peer reviewed scientific journals and made many presentations at local and national meetings. He has been an ad hoc reviewer for Fertility and Sterility, and for Obstetrics and Gynecology.
