About XKnife
Specialists at University of Minnesota Physicians perform stereotactic radiosurgery using the Xknife system, among other technologies. XKnife therapy uses a linear accelerator to produce x-ray beams that are delivered in arcs from different directions. Unlike the Gamma Knife system, which remains motionless during the procedure, part of the XKnife linear accelerator rotates around the patient, delivering radiation beams from different angles. This technology is most often used when multiple, smaller dose treatments are required because the frame that holds the head still can be applied and removed each day. This is especially useful for larger brain tumors or tumors in very critical areas, because they can be targeted with less damage to healthy tissues.
