About Tomotherapy
Specialists at University of Minnesota Physicians perform stereotactic radiosurgery using the TomoTherapy approach, among other technologies. TomoTherapy technology offers significant advantages over traditional radiation delivery systems by administering focused, intensity-modulated radiation therapy. One of the major challenges in treating tumors with radiation is the precise focus of the radiation beam. Imaging in 3-D prior to each treatment with the TomoTherapy system allows physicians to verify the location and shape of the patient's tumor as well as surrounding critical structures. By utilizing the TomoTherapy system, radiation can be administered with greater accuracy to the tumor and with less damage to healthy tissue. The TomoTherapy system is especially useful for extracranial stereotactic radiosurgery — treating tumors along the neck or spine when extreme precision is required.
